14.5 Application: การใช้ tense ในการเล่าเรื่อง

        โดยทั่วไปการเล่าเรื่องใช้  คำกริยารูป past form เพื่อเล่าเรื่องราวในอดีต   

          14.5.1 ถ้าเล่าเหตุการณ์ตามเวลาที่เกิดขึ้น ใช้ past simple     

                        I double checked my reservation. I packed my suitcase, and then I called a taxi.

          14.5.2  บางครั้งอาจใช้  present tense เพื่อให้เกิดผลในทางด้านความรู้สึกว่าเป็นจริง (a dramatic narrative effect)

                       The year is 1066. In medieval England people are worried that the king, Harold, is not strong enough to fight off a Norman invasion.

          14.5.3  ใช้ past continuousเพื่อบรรยายกิจกรรมที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่หรือให้ภูมิหลังของเหตุการณ์ (background)

                       The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. We were driving along the motorway quite steadily until we suddenly saw in front of us the warning lights to slow down. We were heading towards a huge tailback.

          14.5.4  ผู้เล่าอาจใช้ past perfect (simple and continuous) เพื่อให้เรื่องราวน่าสนใจโดยเล่าว่าเหตุการณ์ใดเกิดก่อนหรือหลัง เพื่อไม่ให้เรื่องราวน่าเบื่อโดยเป็นไปตามลำดับเวลาตลอดไป

                        I double checked my reservation, which I had made three days previously.
                        I wanted to visit some friends who had been living in France for the last five years.

           14.5.5 ใช้ past tense เล่าเรื่องที่เป็นนิทานหรือนิยายปรัมปรา

                  การเล่าเรื่องต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น ใช้ past simple tense แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลงแล้ว past continuous แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น ณ ขณะที่พูด  past perfect แสดงผลสืบเนื่องของเหตุการณ์หนึ่งยังอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง

ตัวอย่าง
           ONCE upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter. They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir tree.

The Maid of the Mist
A Native American Myth  Ongiaras Tribe
retold by  S. E. Schlosser

She lost her husband and her hope at a young age, and the beautiful girl could not find her way through the sorrow upon sorrow that was her lot in life. So she stepped one day into her canoe, singing a death song softly to herself, and paddled out into the current. Soon the canoe was caught by the rough waves and hurtled toward the falls. But as it pitched over and she fell, Heno, the god of thunder who lived in the falls, caught the maiden gently in his arms and carried her to his home beneath the thundering veil of water.

Heno and his sons ministered to the grieving girl, and she stayed with them until her heart healed within her. Then the younger son spoke words of love to the maiden and they married, to the delight of the god of thunder. A young son was born to the couple, and he followed his grandfather everywhere, learning what it meant to be a god of thunder.
